Tortilla Press Questions
Tortilla Press? Where can I find a good deal on tortilla press in the North East Valley?
How do you build a tortilla press for over 12" & over tortillas? I have had bad luck in finding a toritilla press over or at 12". I have a bit of wood working knowledge and have seen plenty of "home-made" tortilla presses. So where do I find info or how do I make one for myself? Thanks! Addition: Are there coatings that can be put on the wood to protect it, yet that is safe to eat on after a few washes?
can tortilla press make rotis? can tortilla press make wheat rotis http://www.amazon.com/Norpro-Cast-Aluminum-Tortilla-Press/dp/B00004UE8E wheat flour & water mixed to make the dough, then when the ball is pressed would it come out clean or will it stick.

Pressing out flour tortillas, with an iron tortilla press? I actually looked online and made a tortilla press out of wood. The flour tortillas came out thick, and would not get thin no matter how hard I pushed! So! I gave up and ordered an authentic iron (heavy!) tortilla press online! I was very excited and tried to use it right away! I made my recipe, then went to press.... OH NO!!! The same thing happened! THICK TORTILLAs...... I am sooooo sad.. Does anyone know a good FLOUR tortilla recipe that is easy to press thin with my brand new tortilla press? OH PLLLLEEEEEEZ help me.... (tears) I would try to make the corn tortillas, but cant find any corn flour here in japan! The recipe has absolutely be made from flour... Is there anyone who can give me advice? Thankyou for taking the time to hear me out, I am just sooo frustrated.......
How to make homemade tortilla taquitos? While making taquitos with store bought corn tortillas is easy. I am having a difficult time with making them with home made tortillas. I use the recipe for tortillas on the back of the masa package. The tortillas turn out delicious (I use a tortilla press and cast iron pan for cooking). When I try to make taquitos though they don't roll well and crack to easily (I have used the steam and also the oil and microwave method to soften them before frying).
Flour tortilla recipes? I've tried like 3 different recipes, and I'm just having a hard time. They all come out fine, but the problem seems to be that when I cook them, they come out too thick or stiff, and will break if I try to wrap closed-ended burritos. Then when they go in the fridge, they wind up rock-hard. I mean, I can wrap them in a wet towel & microwave them, and they're soft, but I need something that will allow me to keep them thin and soft. Can I do that without a tortilla press? If the dough feels too gummy, I'll put in more water, but if the recipe calls for so much that the balls squish back together when I put them down to rest for 10 or 15 or whatever it calls for, then I'll add flour. Then I always dust flour on the counter to keep them from sticking when I roll them out, and I'm starting to think this is part of the problem. I need advice from a Mexican grandma, I think.
Making my own flour tortillas? Any advice? Also want high fiber tortilla recipe.? I'm thinking of making my own whole-wheat flour (not corn) tortillas by buying a tortilla press and I wonder if anyone has any experience with how easy this is to do? Also, I'd like to find a high fiber recipe for homemade flour tortillas. Most are very low in fiber (1-2 grams). I can buy tortillas with 4-8 grams of fiber per 8" tortilla but cannot find a recipe for them. The problem is that they are quite expensive to buy and I assume they are much cheaper to make.
Where can I find a tortilla/crepe iron? I used to have one awhile back that was made by Betty Crocker. My grandpa had one years before that made by someone else. However I lost mine and I'm looking for a replacement. I did several online searches and even visited local stores like Bed Bath and Beyond and kitchen speciality shops with no luck. I have no problems whatsoever finding tortilla presses or crepe pans but I am not wanting anything like that. The pans don't make the crepes or tortillas thin enough. They're thick like pancakes. To describe what it looks like, it's similar in shape to a pan: round on one end with a plastic handle. The iron (the round end) has a white base and the iron part is black, and the handle is the same white plastic as the base. It has a cord attached. It's not quite 2" tall to accomodate for the heating element inside the iron end.
Flour tortilla maker? I need a really big tortilla maker for flour tortillas. I can only find small 6"-7" ones for corn tortillas and the big electric press/griddle one on amazon.com. I want just a good, metal 10" or bigger one that doesn't cook them, can you help me or am I destined to my rolling pin for all eternity? Cheap food never equals healthy families. Once you taste homemade tortillas, you'll never go back. I make whole wheat tortillas with flax seed, pumpkin seed and sunflower seed and made with olive oil. They're very good, like a gordita and they don't fall apart like those store bought ones.
Latinas i need your help....how do you make the best tortillas!? whenever i make tortillas they are only good for the one meal, and if i have extras i can't refrigerate them because they go stale! so maybe i'm making them wrong! pretty much i use the maseca and just add some water and then use the press and cook them! i know that that is probably not the way and my mother is not a tortilla making woman so i don't have anyone to teach me! so if you could help me out then i would appreciate it!
Will ethanol make it, or is it going to bomb? Is ethanol going to be an end-all gasoline substitute, or is it going to cause food and other prices to rise so dramatically so as to obliterate its feasibility as a fuel? Do you think Big Oil is behind any of the negative press ethanol has received in the past month or so (tortilla/ethanol protests in Mexico, economic projections in agriculture, etc.)?
How do you make Puffy Tacos? San Antonio has these puffy tacos that are out of this world!! I have been at home trying to make this puffy taco shells. I have the taste right I just cant get the texture of the taco, for some reason it keeps coming out to soft. What you are suppose to do is after you press it into a tortilla put into the oil and let it puff and then flip and stick the spactula in the middle so it can get its taco form. Its made from corn masa and the shell has to be puffy and crunchy yet it has to stay together when you bite into it that it doesnt crumble and fall. So if anyone knows how to make these shells or has any ideas pleeeeeeeease help! thanks. I could take some tips on how to get my picadillo just like san antonios too. P.S. if you are ever in San Anto go to Henry's puffy tacos or Ray's...they r the BEST!!
LMAO......over the top maybe? I'm just an ordinary guy who likes to go out 10 or 15 times a week. My friends say the high number of women I date means I have a problem with intimacy. I disagree. During sex, it never takes me more than three attempts to scream out the correct name. I believe in treating women with dignity and respect. Whether it's exchanging smiles in a checkout line or dry humping under the stars behind a nightclub dumpster, my dates always leave with their self-esteem and underwear intact. I’m like a good aftershave lotion; once you’ve met me you’ll never get me out of your head. I’m also a man of many contradictions. Though I’ve been known to cast fate into the wind (ask me about the time I addressed our section chairwoman as “your holiness”), I understand the need for rules and regulations within a society. What kind of world would it be if we didn’t park our cars in our assigned spaces? I’m not afraid to want it all: a low maintenance girl with whom to share low maintenance fees. I imagine our first date would begin as the security guard lets you drive through the gate. It would end with us gazing into each other’s eyes while sipping sangria in the community hot tub. I’m a spontaneous person who loves to squeeze the life out of everything. I work hard and I play hard. Give me a company credit card and five minutes to pack, and I’m ready for adventure. My motto is: one date at a time. Being in love means never having to explain why everybody in the restaurant keeps referring to me by another name. I also believe that love is a many splendid thing, whether it’s in a darkened booth at an Outback Steakhouse or in the back seat of a Toyota Corolla. Above all, I’d like to meet someone who likes me for who I say I am and not who she thinks I am. Ideal Person: I’d like to meet a woman who isn’t obsessed with material things like money, cars, boats, last-known address, DNA samples, and birth certificates. You should be interested in getting to know the real me, and not whether I have any kids or how come I’m never available on holidays. You should also understand that selling polygraph machines requires irregular hours, sometimes in hotel rooms that rent by the hour. If you’d like to get together, send me an e-mail and we can arrange a time, place, and password. I want to meet a woman who is willing to make a long-term commitment. Right now, I have openings for saturday, dec 8th, 2007 from 7-8 P.M. and friday, dec 14, 2007 from 9-11 P.M. I like to do a variety of things, but I'm guessing the evening will end either on my couch, in your bedroom, or in a public restroom stall. I'll be more than happy to pay for the evening, but if I'm unemployed at the time, donations can be made to my PayPal account. I'm seeking a woman who doesn't have preconceived notions about men/women relationships. You don't care if you can bench-press twice as much of me. You don't feel threatened because I can sense your aura within a three-mile radius. You desire lovemaking that is tender (because of my overly sensitive skin) and gentle (because of my delicate bone structure). Be open to my expressions of affection rather than ignore my phone calls. Understand that I care and am not trying to "suffocate" you. Most of all, know that it hurts my feelings when you move and leave no forwarding address. It may sound shallow but looks do matter. I’m not saying you have to look a specific way, but I’ve dated a lot of uglies and it just never works out. You don’t have to be a Victoria’s Secret model, but at least be good-looking enough to model for “Consumer Reports.” I’d like to meet a woman who could challenge me intellectually. Maybe not a female Einstein, but you should be able to talk about a variety of subjects like football, soap dishes, or what beer goes best with tortilla chips.
which menu would you prefer for a Saturday luch? So I have some family coming over for a Saturday lunch. The guests include my grandparents, parents, brother (18), and cousins (ages 16, 11, and 6)... Menu #1. Mexican/American ~Nacho Soup( I take nacho cheese and mix it with chicken broth add black beans, diced red bell pepper, corn kernels, cilantro, and lime juice and garnish with a flour tortilla cut into thin strips) ~Green Salad w/ ranch ~Steak Fajitas (flour tortillas with marinated steak sautéed with sweet peppers and onions, served with sliced avocado) ~Rice Pudding ~Horchata (a drink made with cinnamon, almonds, cream, rice and water) ~Fruit Punch ~Coffee OR Menu #2. Italian ~Chicken Caesar Salad (with homemade Caesar dressing) ~Sausage and Tomato Soup ~Panini (pressed sandwiches) ~Tiramisu (homemade) ~Caramelized Pears ~Italian Cream Sodas ~Coffee I think the kids would appreciate the bold flavors of Menu #1 where as the adults would prefer the subtle flavors of Menu #2. And I can’t decide, I love both menus… thanks!
