Tortilla

which menu would you prefer for a Saturday luch?

So I have some family coming over for a Saturday lunch. The guests include my grandparents, parents, brother (18), and cousins (ages 16, 11, and 6)...

Menu #1. Mexican/American

~Nacho Soup( I take nacho cheese and mix it with chicken broth add black beans, diced red bell pepper, corn kernels, cilantro, and lime juice and garnish with a flour tortilla cut into thin strips)

~Green Salad w/ ranch

~Steak Fajitas (flour tortillas with marinated steak sautéed with sweet peppers and onions, served with sliced avocado)

~Rice Pudding

~Horchata (a drink made with cinnamon, almonds, cream, rice and water)

~Fruit Punch

~Coffee

OR

Menu #2. Italian

~Chicken Caesar Salad (with homemade Caesar dressing)

~Sausage and Tomato Soup

~Panini (pressed sandwiches)

~Tiramisu (homemade)

~Caramelized Pears

~Italian Cream Sodas

~Coffee

I think the kids would appreciate the bold flavors of Menu #1 where as the adults would prefer the subtle flavors of Menu #2. And I can’t decide, I love both menus… thanks!

Public Comments

  1. make #2 for the adults, and order some pizzas for the kids.
  2. wow they both sound delish! each item i was saying yes yes! each menu item is perfectly paired for each other within each menu. mmm mmm hard decision.

i pick #2; its slightly 'lighter' and 'less complicated' -qualities essential for a larger group, so you dont have to spend as much time in the kitchen in prep work and cleanup - time better spent with your guests. a little fancy too if you will. makes it special
  3. # 2
  4. I'm hispanic but would much rather have the Italian recipe. If you decide to use the Mexican menu then a better version of your nacho soup would be to make a chicken tortilla soup. Its absolutely delicious. Unfortunately I'm not at home right now so I can't give you the recipe but I'm sure you can find it somewhere. Its made up of chicke, chicken broth, rotel tomatoes, monterrey jack cheese, corn, and tortilla chips.
  5. Pick the one where you can have the most fun with your guests and not work too hard. On menu number one tho', I'm not certain that I'd do horchata with rice pudding. To me the flavors are virtually indistinguishible
  6. maybe have the #1 soup and have the rest of #2
  7. i prefer menu#2!!!

    although both are good!!

i like the tiramisu of menu 2 better.
  8. well i know that this isn't one of your choices, but i have a jamacian style turkey salad if you want it, it is absolutley fabulous!!! email me if you want it!
  9. both sound good but i agree with someone above me, go with #2 cuz its more light and not as complicated to make for a bunch of people
  10. I say menu #2. Panini is easier to configure separately for picky kids (don't know who you're dealing with...but my brother and his friends can be weird. Like, my brother will touch no fruit. mmhmm.) who won't take certain things, no tomatoes, etc. It also seems easier.

Frankly, picking a menu cause hte kids will appreciate is more is probably not the smartest move. Kids don't usually care about the margin between self-declared 'good' and 'fantastic'. They'll still love the Italian. The adults are more likely to care intensely about what they're eating.
  11. I think you should go with menu #1, but replace the Nacho soup, it just upsets the whole menu, and replace it with the paninis with a (mildly to mediumly spicy) Mexican twist on it.

P.S. -- Can you be part of my family instead? O.O -- Wow. I have never made such an extensive thing for an occasion like that, neither has any of my family.

P.S.S. -- Are horchatas good? Simple? And do you ahve a good recipe?
  12. #1
  13. I'd go w/ menu 2, although they both sound fantastic. Seriously, if you're worried about it, why not set the kids up w/ a small do it yourself taco station?
