Great round flat bread, what was it?
I had lunch with a friend from the middle east years ago and she made this fantastic round flat bread, almost like tortillas, but it was flavored like it had garlic in it. I have lost touch with her, any idea of the recipe? I know she did not eat eggs so it couldn't have had any in it. She served it along with melted butter.

- pan bread
Great stuff!!
- I'm middle eastern and the bread is called pita bread
- You'll have to narrow the region down. Flat breads are a staple all through the middle east and even India. For ex. Armenian flatbreads are known as lahmajuns and are very large, with spices in them. Greek is pita, Indian is naan or paratha, etc
- pit pan bread?
- Naan is a flatbread found in Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and other surrounding countries. Naan is served for dipping or stuffed with a variety of meats and vegetables. Topping can also be placed in top of the bread.
Naan is like pita, yet softer and most of the time larger. It can be frozen in freezer bags for up to 30 days.
10-12 servings.
INGREDIENTS:
1 package active dry yeast
2 teaspoons sugar
3/4 cup warm water
1 1/2 cup all purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup ghee (see recipe below) or vegetable shortening
3 tablespoons plain yogurt
melted butter for brushing
PREPARATION:
Measure 3/4 cups warm water in a measuring cup. Add sugar and yeast. Allow yeast to soften and stir until yeast is dissolved. Cover measuring cup with towel and allow yeast and water to froth for 5-10 minutes.
In a medium mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.Add yeast water, yogurt, and ghee (or vegetable shortening)and begin to knead for 5-10 minutes, until a dough forms.
Place dough in bowl coated with oil and turn dough around to evenly coat. Cover bowl with towel and allow to rise in a warm area for about 1 hour or until the dough has doubled.
Preheat oven to 400. Divide dough into 10-12 pieces and roll out on floured surface into circles. Place rolled out dough on greased cookie sheet or baking stone and brush with melted butter.
Cook in oven for 8 minutes or until lightly browned and puffed up.
Serve naan immediately or store in pantry or freezer.
- I've made this with a friend of mine who is from Pakistan. She calls it chippati bread. Smells and taste fantastic and not hard to make! YUMMY
- The bread is Naan; the melted butter is Ghee. Traditionally served with goat milk/yogurt.
Partook of this almost daily while stationed in Iraq.
- I think you are talking about Naan - it is indian, not middle eastern - but it is pretty similar.
Middle Eastern Cuisine also has a kind of round flat bread, called pita or lebanese bread. It is pretty much only white flour and water... puffed up with heat.

It is usually served with baba ganoush, tahini, or other dips such as garlic flavored yogurt... :) very healthy, no colesterol, super yummy.
- It is similar to the Indian Flat bread - Naan.
Another version would be roti or chapati or Phulka (only slight difference) - these are very nutritious and easy to make.

- I think you may be talking about LAVASH.
Lavash is as a soft, thin flatbread made with flour, water, and salt. It is similar to a tortilla and can be flavored.
It's delicious! Naans are from India but are never as thin as a tortilla. Roomali roti is more likely.
